It is quite obvious to the Retirement Foundation that talking to people about finance at or near the date of retirement using terminology that they may not be used to or using concepts that are unfamiliar with is quite stressful, however sometimes necessary. The obvious solution is to encourage people in their early 40's or early 50's to go on a "Mid Career Course" where investment themes and terminology used are investigated fully. In doing so, people are not fazed by the terminology or the concepts when they eventually go on their Retirement Course. It also offers an opportunity to take remedial action or to formulate a financial plan at a time when they are able to make a difference.
A typical Mid Career Course which would involve one 90 minute general and five 90 minute specific modules which are optional.
The general module includes an explanation of:
- The Financial Services Authority
- The A-Z of Investments
- Pension planning
- Tax mitigation
- Understanding risk and reward
- The importance of drafting a will
The specialist modules include:
- Creating a personal financial strategy
- Investment options
- Tax efficiency for the employed person
- The mortgage market
- Inheritance tax mitigation
We do rely heavily on the human resources department to indicate in general terms the sophistication or otherwise of the audience.
